Family Law Resolution

I have to tell you that my Pre-Paid Legal plan was the best investment
I ever made. I had a lawyer acting for, me for over two years, with little or
no results. After my initial phone call, to Pre-Paid Legal's firm of Watson
Goepel Maledy, I was called back within hours and had a consultation
with their family law expert. Their lawyer sent out a letter to my ex and
her boyfriend and I got instant results. I now see my daughter without any
of the games that were going on before. The threat of a contempt citation
and a pending tortuous interference suit, in the matter of access to my
daughter, was quickly resolved. I shall be, forever grateful, to you and to
Pre-Paid Legal for the protection of my rights and the peace of mind it has
afforded me. I strongly recommend Pre-Paid Legal to anyone who wants to
have one of the top law firms in British Columbia acting on their behalf.
Sincerely
Darwin M. Sorenson

Overcharge On Utilities Bill

When I was packing up to move to B.C. from Halifax I discovered that my telephone company had, unknown to me, been charging me for a piece of equipment I did not have.  When I queried the woman on the phone about crediting the account, she agreed to credit the cost of the equipment, but not the usage charge.

I accepted that for a while, but when I got to Vancouver, it started to gnaw at me as being unfair, so I contacted my PPL lawyer.  They referred me to a lawyer back in Halifax, and contacted him, telling him that he would be hearing from me.

Within a day or so, I called him and explained my situation.  I left it with him for a couple of days, but he called me back later the same day.  He called the Telco to find out that it had been charging me for the unknown phone for much longer than I originally thought.  Leaving out the details of his conversation with the Telco representative, he advised me to call the Telco in a couple of days.  I called the next week.

I was unable to get the original person on the line, but explained that MY LAWYER had been speaking to someone the previous week and I was to follow up.  She was very helpful, but wanted time to research the situation herself.  At that point, I told her what I wanted to see happen.  I had been refusing to pay my account, $127.00, until the matter was resolved.  I told her I thought they probably owed me more than I owed them, but if she would credit my account for the $127, I would drop the matter there and then.

She accepted;  I saved $127, and walked away happy, having my PPL membership paid for almost a year.

Cheers,
Dan Eisenhauer.

Empowered & Saved $300.00

I've been divorced from my children's father for over 9 years now and at the
time was "hurried" for a settlement wherein there was minimal child support.
Over the last few years, as my children have reached teenage years, I have
reached out for the strength to deal with such a stressful issue and to again
enrich the pocket of yet another attorney!

After my ex-husband had moved out of Arkansas, last February, I called our
providing attorney firm and talked it over with them. I was then referred out to
counsel in my locale since the jurisdiction was at issue and the matter needed
to be moved from Arkansas to Kansas. However, I still lacked the composure
to begin a, knowingly hostile, suit.

With good advice from husband and brother, I tried to amiably request from my ex-husband a review of child support and medical premium. Guess what? He said WWIV would break out, ( WWIII was our child custody suit ) and reduced me to anger and tears. I let him win again.

In my dealings with my Pre-Paid Legal family, the confidence and strength that I've gained, I have resolved that he cannot - unless I give him permission to do so - "bully" me again. It is RIGHT that he pay for his share of their support. It is RIGHT that the situation be reviewed - and I feel confident that the attorney who is in charge, will diligently seek the answers on my behalf.

My appointment was last Wednesday and I saved $300 over his usual $1200.00 -  ten hour retainer for such a matter. I can't tell you how powerful it feels to know that I can also critique the referral attorney on the job he does for me as well!

Lease Agreement

My name is Billy Pine and I am an associate working in Milton, Ontario.
Having been a member of PPL since 1998, while having a New York State
membership, I was able to effectively use the service to get a great financial
saving for myself.

Along with the Motor Vehicle help that I received in the moving violation
department, on a couple of occasions, I was able to contact the provider
law firm for New York, and get the assistance of handling the tickets. With
the representation received, I was able to avoid marks on my license and to
pay the applicable fine with no more problems.

The real benefit that I received from Prepaid Legal Services came from the
review of a lease agreement I had with a Leasing Company over a Copier in my business. At the tail end of the agreement (six months to go), the machine started acting up and needed repairs. The sales representative told me that if it broke down any further, I would have to repair it, ( $1,000.00 estimated cost ) because I couldn't return a machine that was not in working order. Forget the fact that I thought I would own it, outright, in the end, I had to scrap that thought when the company said the minimum price to keep the machine was $1,000.00.

By the review of this lease agreement, I was told that I was stuck with this machine, but through the advice received, I was told to "cut my losses", give back the machine and pay the balance owed and end the agreement. When I told the sales representative of this, over the phone, he personally came to see me with a proposal to wipe away all remaining liability on the machine if I would lease a new machine that was in effect, the proper machine for the work I wanted to complete. By doing so, I would be saving over $5,000.00. Thanks to some smart thinking, by the provider attorney, I avoided any further problems and the savings came at a very critical time in my business.

I will be forever grateful to the Prepaid Legal plan and would never be caught without it!!

Canada.

Tax Resolution

Sandra & I own and operate a Bed & Breakfast here in Victoria
and have done so for the past ten years. In the Spring of 1999, we were queried by a local tax individual and were informed we owed a few thousand dollars in room taxes we had failed to collect.

Questioning the merits of his argument, we called our PPL lawyer to relate the facts of the situation. With the advice of counsel, we then went back to the individual and stated our case advising his office would receive a call and or letter from our lawyer should they "pester" us further.

Happily, we never did hear from them again. Did we get our money's worth? You bet we did! If it had not been for Prepaid Legal, we might have paid a lot of money just to get out of a situation. As it was, PPL gave us affordable access to the legal system where we were informed of our rights and avoided a possible costly result.

We will never be without Prepaid Legal. .......  NEVER!!!

   Defective Product
My success story involves Future Shop.  In mid-summer I bought a new computer.  When I got the system home, I found that I was able to receive e-mail but every time I went to send a message I got dumped off line, and had to dial in again before it would send.  This was extremely frustrating, so I called Future Shop's techs who suggested a fix. It didn't work, they suggested something else, that didn't work either!  They then determined it must be the internet provider's problem.  I called the internet provider, they suggested a fix, which also didn't work so they advised me to go back to Future Shop since it must be faulty equipment.

Back at Future Shop, reluctantly they suggested I should bring the computer in and their tech would look at it, and I could have the system back within 48 hours ( I had explained I needed it for work!).  Every day for the next week I contacted them to see if my system was ready.  Finally after 8 days, I was told it was ready and to come in and pick it up.

As soon as I got home I plugged it in and sent an e-mail to a friend.  I was immediately dumped off-line!  Now I was frustrated and angry.  I called Future Shop again and asked for the Manager.  He was out, but I was told would call me back as soon as he came in.  I waited 2 days - still no call.  Then I phoned Pre-Paid Legal.  Within a few hours a lawyer called me back.  I explained the problem.  "Would you like me to call them for you?" she asked. "Yes please" I replied happily.  The following day I received a call from the Manager of Future Shop.  If I would bring my computer in they would be happy to exchange it.  Oh joy!!!

When I got to Future Shop, we discovered they no longer carried the processor I had so recently purchased, so they gave me a compatible processor with quite a bit more memory - and valued at $300 more than the one I had returned.  The way I figure it, my PPL membership is free this year!!!

Thank you PPL.

Loan Repayment Demand

My son, Colin, has been away at college, to get his Chiropractic degree, for
the last seven years and  he has several student loans outstanding, to pay
for his education. This spring, for no apparent reason, the major Bank that
he had a $20,000 loan with, demanded repayment immediately.  As I had
co-signed that loan, they also made this demand to me.

Legal action was taken against us and a summons was delivered to our home
on Salt Spring Island, B.C. for us to appear in the Vancouver Court House.
I called up my Legal Provider and they told us to go to the BC Government
website. Then they directed us to the "Statement of Defence" forms that we
needed and the correct wording to use to fill them out.  These forms had to
be delivered to the Vancouver Court House and they also directed us on who
to phone and how to get a confirmation that they had been received. After
following their directions, we waited for a response.
Three months later we got a letter from the Bank's lawyers in Toronto, saying
they had received a copy of our "Statement of Defence".  They enclosed a set
of forms for my son to complete asking, "How could they help my son and could
he advise them how he proposed to resolve this matter"?
Neither I nor my son's credit rating have been affected. My son has set up a
repayment schedule that will be reviewed again next spring when he has
started up his practice.
Without the help of my Provider Lawyers, I would not have known what to
do, especially on an island where getting the required forms is time
consuming and difficult.  Also, the support to complete the forms and where
to send them was priceless and I cannot thank them enough.
The saving of my time and energy and $20,000 has proved to me that everyone
should have Prepaid Legal coverage.

Withholding Funds

I had sold my mobile home and was calling the purchaser's lawyers in Vancouver to find out how they were sending my cheque.

I was not using a lawyer as it's $50.00 for the purchasers to register with the Mobile Home Registry plus  the mobile was clear title.

I had signed over my rights to the mobile and faxed the papers back to these lawyers previously and was inquiring about my funds on the closure date.

Well, the lawyer's secretary told me they were not sending the monies until the Mobile was registered....which I have never heard of and I complained. The secretary mentioned the estate monies for their client (my purchaser) had not come in until that date, so how did I expect mine that same day? I mentioned registration could take a month.  Answer....that is the way it is.......also the fact the purchaser had the keys and already moved in the day before was ......"that's just what happens.....mobile homes are different".

So, I mentioned that I have PPL.  The secretary wanted to know what that was.  I explained it's Pre Paid Legal.  She then asked if I lived in Richmond?  "The Richmond Credit Union has Pre Paid Legal for their employees", she told me as she thought I lived on the Island. I agreed that I lived on the Island but I had Pre Paid Legal Care Canada.   "My Lawyers are Watson, Goepel, and Maledy", I said.  "Oh"....was the comment....."I'll see what I can do."

Before I called PPL I called her back about an hour later and gave my name.  Immediately she told me that my cheque was with Purilator and would be at my doorstep before noon the next day.  Sure enough it was ..... I did not even have to call PPL .....only mention the name of our provider firm Watson, Goepel,  Maledy!  It's like magic!

  Equity Returned

In the summer of 1998, we moved from Bella Coola, B.C. to Vernon, B.C.  In Bella Coola, we were members of the Co-Op. How a Co-Op works, is you buy shares, and, as you shop and spend money, equity builds up.  Over the 25 years we lived there, we built up equity of approximately $1,800.  When we left Bella Coola, we requested that our membership be dissolved and that we be paid out our equity. They refused. We were told that, because we still owned property there, we could not have our money. If we had rented, there would be no problem. Needless to say, this did not make sense to us. We did not even know such a rule existed.  We fought with them for a year. Each time we made a request, it was staunchly turned down. The day that Pre-Paid Legal Care opened up in B.C, we took out a membership. The first thing we did was phone the provider firm. We were promptly and courteously dealt with. The Attorney, we spoke with, advised us to write a letter to the Co-Op and request a copy of their by-laws and specifically a copy of the agreement that we signed that said we could not dissolve our membership and withdraw our equity if we owned property. We were then able to write a letter to them saying, that on the advice of our attorney, we were requesting the information. We were also able to let them know that a copy of that letter was being sent to our attorney. We mailed the letter off and 12 days later, at 9:30 at night, we received a phone call from a member of the Board of Directors. He said they had just finished a meeting and they were writing us a cheque. Not only that, they decided that the rule of not giving people their equity because they owned property was no longer proper. Others who moved and were having the same problems were getting their money too. No fuss, no hassle, one phone call, one letter. Thank you Pre-Paid Legal Care of Canada.

Security Deposit Returned

This is a little story with regards to a security deposit.

A member of mine, who happens to be a physician, decided to purchase a house and move his practice into it.  Once he had moved his practice, he was refused the return of his security deposit, from the mall where he originally rented his offices.  There was no reason why they should withhold the refund.  His wife had purchased a PPL membership for them and suggested this would be a good time to try out the service.  They were already over-tired and stressed out from the move.  They placed a call to our provider law firm in B.C.  The lawyer they spoke to sent a letter to the owner of the mall.  Within two days of the receipt of that letter (with the impressive letterhead), this couple received their security deposit back and were so thankful they didn't have any additional hassle to endure.

Home Owner Question

We have called our Provider Attorney many times since becoming members.

The most recent occasion occurred this past week and involved a large tree

in our yard which had produced roots that were causing some concern to our

next-door neighbor.

He believed that the roots would damage the foundation to his house and he

wanted us to cut down the tree to solve the problem. We really like the tree

and did not want to see it removed unless it became necessary to do so. We

called the Provider attorney’s office to discuss the situation and to get some

advice on what to do next.

We were called back within a couple of hours and received courteous, pleasant service from the lawyer assigned to handle our situation. We were advised in simple terms what our rights were and what our neighbor was entitled to do in the situation. If this was the end of it, it would have been fine: our question had been answered, fully and promptly.

What happened next is the real reason to write this note. The lawyer suggested that if we were going to remove the tree, that we contact our local municipality to see if there might be some assistance, financial or otherwise, that could be available to us.

This is true thinking outside the box and we were impressed with the lawyer’s creativity and with the sincere attitude of trying to help us.

Well done!!

$4,000 for 1 Letter From Lawyer

I have been with Pre Paid Legal for almost 1 year now, the last time I used my membership was with a sort of last resort mentality. I run a successful business that operates throughout the lower mainland!

I was at my favourite donut shop one morning, waiting in line as usual for my donut and coffee. As usual there was a large line up and disorganized one at that. And as has happened on more than one occasion a large gentleman went to the front of the line and tried to avoid the line up. I asked him to respect the fact that he should go to the back of the line up. He originally ignored me, I then insisted that he move to the back of the line up.

At that time, he grabbed me around the throat, being twice my size I was frightened but managed to sweep his arm away, he then grunted and left. The manager of the donut shop gave me my coffee and donut for free, and apologized for the difficulty.

I left but was very upset, I decided to call the company and complain. They really did not give me the response that I expected, it was very "disturbing" that they would allow this to happen over and over without doing anything about it!

I then wrote them a letter and again got no satisfactory response from this "large company"!

At that time I decided to call my Pre Paid Legal lawyer and see what they thought about this. I told the story, and the lawyer told me that it required more research and they would get back to me. They called me back telling me that this donut shop was in contravention of a law surrounding the "safe and orderly" lining up of clients in a retail situation.

They put this in to a letter on the Law Firms letterhead forwarded it to the appropriate department at this large donut shops head office, explaining how we could make their life really miserable by pursuing this issue. And a couple weeks later I received a check for $4000.00 dollars!!

This result was truly beyond my wildest expectations. I would not have contacted a Law Firm if I had not owned the Pre Paid Legal membership. Thanks Pre Paid Legal.

Contract Review in Hawaii

Just a quick note to update you on life in paradise...

I received my PPL membership and have already put it
to good use by having that business contract reviewed.
I am happy to tell you that the service I received was
excellent, and I am another satisfied customer to add
to your roster.

  Member Vote Of Confidence

I live in Lions Bay B.C, Canada, with my husband Glen.We have built successful insurance agencies, as well as our own personal financial planning practices.

We have used our membership and, as a result, saved tens of thousands of dollars. We are extremely satisfied!

It didn't take us long to recognize that helping Canadians to access the legal system for less than the price of a cup of coffee, each day, would place us in front of a HUGE wave!

More recently, I spent eight years, fulltime, as a successful distributor of nutritional products for a well known MAJOR Network Marketing company. In our first three months, with PPL Legal Care of Canada, we earned what had taken us a full year to earn in our previous company.

We truly believe that Pre-Paid Legal and it's subsidiaries will become the most popular way to access legal services in North America in the very near future.

Family Law "Children &Access"

In the summer of 2000, I had a matter to deal with in Provincial
Court. Although I was fairly prepared, I still did not have all the facts
and I certainly was not considering self representation for my case in
a Provincial courtroom. I did, however, want to save some money and
I wanted to get an order set down.

I had been dealing with a lawyer at Watson Goepel and Maledy who
provided me with valuable information during a telephone consultation
as well as some strong personal encouragement. I was able to go into
the courtroom and represent myself with complete confidence. Not only
did I save a little under $1000.00, the judge was in my favour.

I have complete trust and confidence in our law firm and specifically ,
my Lawyer. Although I have dealt with only a few others, before I was
a member, there is no comparison in the professionalism and mannerism
with which my lawyer conducts himself. I would recommend him personally
to the Queen.

Sincerely,
Nikkea B. Martens (a.k.a. Kelly Walsh)

  Partial Refund On Truck Purchase

My story is that, just after I received my PPL Legal Services of Canada membership, I asked the law firm to help get me money back on a truck that I bought about a year ago. Over that period of time, I found that the mileage on the truck had been changed.

I phoned the law firm and they told me how to go about getting my money back. So I took what they told me and went to see the dealer that I bought the truck from. The dealer wanted proof that the mileage was changed so I showed him, that I knew it had been changed and that I had a Pre-Paid Legal membership.. The dealer told me to come back the next day, so I did and I received a $3,000.00 refund from the $10,000.00 that I had originally paid. I was very pleased with this settlement.

My Pre-Paid Legal membership has already paid for itself for the next ten years!!

  Family Law & Computer Lease

The following is a success story that I`d like to tell you about with one of my members.

I received a phone call from her, mentioning that she had heard from another source that I had access to a lawyer for a small monthly fee. The situation with this lady was that a couple weeks before she had received a subpoena to go to Supreme Court within just a few days. The matter was to do with her ex-spouse, from 10 years prior. After she walked away from the relationship wanting nothing, the ex-spouse was seeking "everything in the book" that he could get his hands on, even after such a lengthy time.

At this time, I had 30 minutes to spare, before I had to be at my regular j.o.b. I was able to stop in and see this lady, and with 15 minutes to spare, I signed her up on the spot.

She was able to contact the provider law firm that day. They referred her to a law firm in our area and she was able to go ahead and get the proper representation for her situation with immediate, satisfactory results. I should mention, that prior to buying her membership, she spent a $500.00 retainer, with another lawyer, with little satisfaction.

Ah but wait, it doesn't end yet. Once she had received her membership # , she settled another matter, very quickly, concerning a computer company. She was leasing a computer for her business and, in the lease, the company was responsible for maintenance and repairs to her computer. She had experienced problems with the computer and had been trying to get the company to fix it but to no avail. All it took was a phone call to the provider firm and the situation was remedied in short order.

Stories like this prove what a powerful and valuable service we have in our hands. Incidentally, I was able to be at work with three minutes to spare.

It was an awesome feeling to be able to help this person in this way.

Thank you PPL.

  Rental Equipment Payments

Back when I was in the restaurant business, I had the opportunity to upgrade my current (obsolete) point of sale system (cash register). I rented a very nice system and then had it installed. About 6 months after the rental, the property on which my restaurant was sitting was sold and I (obviously) no longer required the rented equipment. I called the equipment people and they came and removed the equipment. I paid a penalty and the last month's
rent and I thought things were done.

About 6 months after that, the leasing company called and asked when I was going to start making the payments on the equipment. I told them the above story and they said I was still on the hook for the payments. I pointed out that they were in possession of the equipment and I had paid a penalty for early release of the agreement. That wasn't good enough for them.

I hadn't signed off of the agreement and was still liable.

I had just signed up for PPL and thought this was a pretty good test. I called Watson Goepel, Maledy and explained my situation. This was at 4:45 in the afternoon. My lawyer called me back on my cell phone from her house at 6:20  that evening! I was already impressed!

My lawyer asked for a copy of the agreement to be faxed to her.
She couldn't read the fax, so I emailed her the contents of the agreement. She made a call...

I haven't heard from the leasing company since! Great work!

By the way, the money I would have had to pay if I wouldn't have had a lawyer help me out would have paid for my PPL membership for 14 YEARS!!! I'm Pretty happy about that.

I have used my memberships for other issues as well and I figure that I can't live long enough to equal the savings I have received, based on my monthly dues of just $25.00 a month.

Thank-you PPL!

Internet Issue

This is not a big story, but maybe a little different, considering that it involves the internet.

At the request of family, I signed up to an internet site, by the name of "My Family.com". The purpose of the site, was to arrange a family re-union, for a few years down the road and, as well, to install the "Kennedy" Family Tree, so that it would be available to family all over the world.  The Tree format was already on disk and it was a matter of uploading to the internet.  While I was the Administrator of the site, one of my brothers actually installed the Tree of several hundred names, going back many generations.

After it was all nicely installed, someone informed us that, as the information included such things as marriages, birth dates, maiden names etc, a relative might take exception to the information and, in fact, it might be libelous.  As I was the administrator of the site, clearly the ball was in my court to get some legal advice.

I was a new member in Pre-paid Legal so I thought, well here is my first test.  I phoned the receptionist and a lawyer got back to me the following day.  She heard my story and indicated she would have to do some research.  She got back to me again, the next day, and confirmed there was a potential for legal liability, even though the web-site was behind a password.  She suggested a couple of things we could do to minimize the risk.

It is just an example of the benefit of the Preventative section of the Pre-Paid Legal Benefit package.
Before PPL, I would have gone merrily on my way and, in doing that, had the potential to suffer serious consequences, by not obtaining that timely legal advice to review my rights and the rights of others involved in this Family Tree.  I had already done that a few times in my life.

Marilynn and I have since used the service, on a couple of other occasions, as a threat, more than anything, but this time it was not an idle threat, but one backed by a prominent lawyer as near as a phone.  In other
words, we now can find out our rights with just a simple phone call.

Thank you Pre-paid Legal,

Member Saved $25,000.00

Jim Howie bought the membership from me in July. He says, "Canadians need this membership badly. You get sued in the name of the store, and again in
your own name!" He quickly used the service, to have a document reviewed, that he'd had a 'boiler plate' lawyer review before. He says that by using Ontario's
provider law firm, "Mills and Mills", he saved $1000.00.

He was so happy that he had his brother purchase a membership from me as well.

I saw him, the other day, and he is really happy. He was being sued by one of the largest collection agencies in North America, for goods he had not received. They had been after
him for months and it was finally going to court. Mills and Mills sent them a letter, just before the court date, and said, they would "vigorously defend their client  ...!" Lawyers don't use those words very lightly. They backed off, the court date was cancelled, and they have taken no further action since. Jim doesn't expect to hear from them again.

He just saved himself $24,000.00! Two different lawyers at
Mills and Mills, were helping him to solve this case.

Another very satisfied member!!

Dispute With Long Distance

I just saved enough, on one issue, to pay for a year of my Pre-Paid Legal membership, (again).
I switched long distance carriers on Oct. 17, 2000. My previous provider had me on a .05 a minute plan in and out of state. When I switched carriers on Oct. 17, my previous carrier
tried to change my .05 plan to full retail and charge me the difference on calls made prior to that date.

I called them and disputed. They hassled me and said "sorry- no adjustments can be made". I then three-wayed my new carrier in to verify dates and records, and was given the same "sorry", I then informed the old carrier, that I disputed the charges, I would not pay
anything and I would be referring this to my California Provider Attorney.
They just called me back and issued a $ 310.83 credit to my account. Amazing from "sorry" to over a $ 300.00 credit in less than 10 minutes.
I think being a prepaid member just paid for another year!

Peace Of Mind & Expediency

On Saturday, September 25, 1999 at 4:30 AM, my wife’s car was totaled by a hit and run driver.

We were out of town, and had left her car parked at the curb in front of our house. When we returned to town all we had was a note from the R.C.M.P. (Incident Report) stating that the car was a write off and that the B.C. Insurance Corporation had possession of it.

Monday morning my wife, Dawn, called the Provider Law firm. In a matter of just a couple hours the Insurance Lawyer called back. Dawn explained that she didn’t have a problem yet but she didn’t want any. The lawyer gave Dawn directions as to how to present her information to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. (questions to ask and information to give).

Dawn then called I.C.B.C. and followed the directions from the lawyer exactly. This was at about 11:00 A.M. Monday. No stress, she knew what to do and how.

At approximately 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, (same week), she received a call from I.C.B.C. saying "Come pick up your cheque." 2 DAYS!  I have to believe this was because everything was done exactly right.

Now, as impressive as getting paid out in 2 days is, what I felt good about was, I didn’t need to be there. Because of PPL, Dawn had a source of reliable advice. This gives both, my wife and myself, PEACE OF MIND.

Defective Car Brakes

I bought a Nissan Maxima from a dealer in Ottawa in August of 1999.
Ever since I bought the car, it would "grind" when I applied the brakes.
I took the car back to the dealer's service centre at least eight times.
I wanted them to fix it under warrantee. The same mechanic worked
on it each time.

One morning, I had gone for breakfast, when he worked on the car. When
I returned, he informed me that he "knows and guarantees" me that it was
the rear rotors. As a matter of fact, he was so confident, that he'd changed
them, already, without even asking me first! I thought --" Fine, he's got it all
figured out." Then the surprise came. As they gave me my keys back, (as
they had the seven previous times), they also handed me a BILL! They told
me that it would have to be paid, before I could leave with my car ....

I paid the bill, then went straight over to the dealer. They listened to my story
and said, "Too bad!!" I thought this would be a good time to try my Pre-Paid
Legal Care of Canada membership. On my way home, my brakes made the
"grinding sound", as always. That was it!! I took the car back and demanded
that a "different" mechanic look at it. One did, and found out, within seconds,
that the FRONT brakes were completely defective. They changed them and
said I "could not" have them, and they would be credited , in full, since they
were defective. Since they installed the new front brakes, the car works great!!

Now, since they had caused eight months of wasting my time, unsafe driving
conditions and a bill for the rear rotors, that really didn't need fixing, I was not
too happy, to say the least!! They refused to pay back the wasted money for
the rotors that I did not need. One person would tell me to go see another
person. I was getting the run-around. I told them I would give them one week
to contact me with a solution. No calls came from anyone ...

I called our Ontario Provider Law firm, "Mills and Mills", and had them write a
letter to both the Dealer and their Service Centre. The car dealer phoned me
and said they couldn't believe they had received a letter from a lawyer and were
willing to do whatever was necessary, to have the charges dropped. I suggested
that I pick up a refund cheque - they thought that was a good idea!!

Thank you, Pre-Paid Legal Care of Canada Corp. I would never in a million years
have thought of picking up the Yellow Pages and calling a lawyer.

Just from using my membership once, the refund I collected paid my membership
for a full year! Now I dare anyone to tell me that this membership doesn't work

Collection Agency Harassment

Three years ago, a lady ordered a collection of Christmas music through Publisher's Clearing House with her credit card. She never received the $79.00 package. She kept receiving bills from the Clearing House, (she informed them that she'd never received the order), and then, from a collection agency. Her phone calls and letters were ignored. Soon another collection agency began harassing her with notices, rude and threatening phone calls. She became a member of Pre-Paid Legal Care of Canada and informed
the collection agency with a letter and a copy to her Ontario provider law firm, Mills and Mills.

Within days of receiving a letter, (noting a copy to the lawyers), they apologized, correcting her credit rating and ceasing all further harassment. Mills and Mills didn't think that was adequate compensation, for what their member had gone through, and wrote the Clearing House a letter, informing them of her stress and emotional distress   ---  Within days, the member received a cheque from the Clearing House for $500.00.

Company Dismissal

A lady, who worked for a life insurance company, as a programmer, for over two years,

was, one day not permitted to come to her office. The company terminated her, paid
her two weeks salary, and completely "forgot" to pay her bonuses that she was entitled
to, according to her contract. She tried to talk about it, but nobody wanted to listen to
her. She became a member of P.P.L. Legal Care of Canada, and then called her provider
law firm. This is her story:

"Do you want to know how powerful your company is? I called the PPL Lawyer and he
called me back very quickly. He asked me some questions, to which I could give him
positive answers. He asked me to send my employment contract for him to review. I
understood that I could be right. Then he wrote a letter to my former employer, and sent
me a copy. Today I received a letter from "ABC Insurance Company" to let me know that
they agreed with all the statements in Mills and Mills letter, and are ready to pay me
$13,400.00. They paid me more than I was expecting!!
Purchasing the PPL membership was the best investment I've made in my life. I paid $25.00 and I get back $13,400.00 in a month. I have decided to keep this membership forever and I want to thank you again for giving me the chance to use this service. Frankly, even my friends don't believe me that, paying so little, I could get so much. It's Terrific!!"

Delayed Holiday Pay

My wife quit her job and had not been given her holiday pay.

Over three months had passed and since she was in Norway,
visiting family, I called her employer about picking up her cheque.
I was told it would be there on Tuesday with the regular pay cheque
run. I went there to pick it up and spoke to the owner, who said it
was not there and would not be there until the end of the month!
I told him that it was long overdue, but he insisted that it would not
be paid until August 31st. I then pulled my Pre-Paid Legal membership
card out of my wallet, held it up so he could see it clearly, and told him
that if he didn't have the cheque ready for the next day, he would be in
big trouble. He then said, "If the cheque is not here by tomorrow, at noon,
I will give you cash." It works folks!! When people know that you know that
you have rights   ...   you get results!!

Car Insurance Problem

I won a case with the Auto Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, ( I.C.B.C.)

I'd had the help of another lawyer, prior to PPL Legal Care of Canada Corp being
launched in British Columbia. They withheld $500.00 of what was due to me. I called
B.C.'s provider law firm, Watson, Goepel, Maledy, who instructed me what to tell those
lawyers. They relented and agreed to pay half. I then called the provider firm again. They
provided me with a strong message to convey to my former lawyers. Within two hours,
I received a phone call with the news that they had recanted and would remit the full
$500.00 due to me. Becoming a PPL member is the best thing that ever happened to me.
Now, for the first time in my life, I feel "protected"!

Racial Harassment

I had a situation of a racial harassment problem, at work, which distressed me very much. I called the provider number and a lawyer got back to me within five minutes. The advice he gave me was what was best for my situation. He directed me to resources which had been designed for such problems and solved those issues, free of charge, and within a very short

time frame. His advice was a pleasant surprise, since he did not attempt to turn my misfortune into a money making machine for the firm. His priority was MY best interest, not the firm's bank account.

Airline Ticket Purchase

My story started in February, 1999. I had purchased an open ticket for my wife Sandi to fly from Vancouver to Ottawa.   This purchase was made through the our AeroPlan points.  These tickets are open thus allowing the person named to fly within a year period.

My wife was going to fly in April of 1999 but due to surgery, this was cancelled.  We were going to re-schedule for September but this was cancelled due to my wife's mother being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.  My saga continues, my mother in-law was not expected to survive into the new year but surprised us and passed away on the 15th of February, 2000.

Our very close friend, in Ottawa, was the person my wife was going to visit. Aeroplan people were asked if the ticket could be transferred into our friend's name, to allow her to attend the funeral (also this would have saved us a few dollars), they stated "no", so we used some more points to fly her out to Vancouver (30,000).

On March 12th, I approached the Aeroplan to have our ticket reverted to points as we were not going to be doing any travel at this time. After explaining our demise, we received a very polite "sorry" but the year is up. The apologetic customer service person stated that we could send a letter into the appeal section of their customer relations, and see what they say.  This was done and about two months after, I received a phone call on my Voice Mail, in which the male person, who did not even leave his name, stated **SO SORRY*. This was the last straw, and with a telephone call to our Vancouver Provider Law firm, Lawyer, Christine Alexander sent several letters and also traced me down as I was out of town, in the Kootenays, to let me know that our points had been returned.  A open ticket to Ottawa is over $1,000.00 thus we received a great saving, thanks to Pre-Paid Legal.

Embarrassment Rectified

I was on my way to take a client out for dinner, when I stopped at an ATM machine to
withdraw some cash required. The machine consumed my card and I never got my cash.
In total embarrassment, I had to ask my client to pay for the meal until I could get to the
bank the following day. The next day I went to the bank for two reasons. One to retrieve my
card, but, more importantly, to speak with the bank manager and to ask for an apology. They
hummed and hah'ed and tried to switch me around. I raised my voice and asked to see the
bank manager. I insisted that he give me a written apology, so I could prove to my client that
it was not my fault, that I had money in my account, so that my reputation was cleared by
having a statement from the bank, saying so. He hummed and hah'ed and stalled around until
I threatened to use my PPL membership. At that point, I received a handwritten letter, right on
the spot. This membership provides the necessary leverage to have your rights respected!!

Work Injury In Texas

I want to tell my story about the Pre Paid Legal Membership and how it has helped me.
I worked for an air conditioning contractor as an installer. I was more of a helper than anything else but I worked like crazy. 10-12 hour days in the summer. It is hot work. We had some record heat and drought throughout East Texas and North Louisiana. It was tough. My Dad came to see me July 4th weekend and sold me a PPL Membership and I signed up as a FSTS associate. I'm going to concentrate on the membership in this story.

In Early September I began to have some problems with my employer. I gave my notice to leave in November. I gave them 6 weeks notice. On October the 5th I was working at the shop when I hurt my back. My back was messed up and I knew it! My employer, on the other hand, thought I was faking the Injury! I had to take myself to the Doctor. The doctor gave me an X-ray, prescribed some medication and took me off work for 5 days. She said that if my back wasn't better by then, they would do an MRI. All well and good, but when I went back for the follow up appointment, I saw a different doctor who had been in contact with my employer. He said I was not hurt and sent me back to work! My back was killing me! But I went back to work the next day and passed out! They took me back to see the doctor and I had 100 degree temperature. I told them my back was hurt and I wanted to change doctors. They said NO! I had my cell phone with me and I called MY LAWYER! In Texas that's ROSS AND MATHEWS,P.C. in Ft. Worth. When I got customer service on the phone and began to tell what my problem was, everyone in the room was looking at me.

By the time I got off the phone I had:

1. Been referred to a specialist
2. An MRI had been ordered
3. I was taken off work for 2 months

Now that in itself was worth the membership to me, But that's not all! The MRI came back and showed a herniated disk in my lower back. So as a result I have received Physical Therapy and some Money! I'm still receiving checks. I want to say that IT IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY! I would have been forced back to work with a serious injury that most likely would have gotten WORSE! But WAIT! Still more to come! After my employer found out I was not faking...They Fired Me! Instead of an apology I get fired! So now I am considering suing them for wrongful termination. Most of the time I feel I don't want to, but when my back hurts and I think of how they treated me throughout the whole process I get angry. But I don't have time to be angry. I want to build a PPL Business instead! So I think I will drop the suit and focus on My Success in this business.

So, if you haven't used your membership use it now! Ask Those Questions! Get Your WILL done! Use it so you can have your story!

Total Peace Of Mind

I just love my Pre-paid Membership. I was very upset one
day when my estranged husband had taken my Jeep. We
have two small children and I could not take them to school.
I went over to my girlfriends home. I have gone to church with
her for years. I needed someone to confide in and so I went over
to visit her. She gave me one of her PPL brochures and said that
her husband had just started a business and she said she thought
it could really help. I read the brochure and was hooked. I called
her back and wanted more information.

I went to the meeting and learned from Ed Parker how it all works.
The next day I called my own lawyer and found out what I needed.
I have used the membership now more than I ever thought I would.
If someone owes me money or I need to sign a contract I just call
my lawyer. Since then I have saved over $2500.00 and this is just
the beginning. This membership for this single women with two small
children truly has given me Protection, Security, and Peace of mind.

Product Rebate

This story is with regard to my cousin using her membership.

She had not had it that long, when she purchased a CD game, that
was a little over priced, for her 6 year old, but with the $ 35.00 mail
in rebate, she thought it was more reasonable.  After approximately
2 months had gone by, still no rebate and a phone call from herself,
asking about it - she decided to try out her membership.  A lawyer
returned her call, in just a few hours, then made a call on her behalf,
to the place offering the rebate. Within five days she had received a
cheque in the amount of $35.00. Presto!! Another satisfied member!!

Lawyer Helps Save $19.22

In August, I had a creditor who decided to send my account to a collector, in spite of
the fact that I was attempting to negotiate a settlement. The total bill that the collector
was demanding that I pay was $178.35. This included charges for several days of service
which I had not received PLUS an additional interest charge. Normally I would have just
"bitten the bullet" and paid the bill. However, having a lawyer on retainer, like the wealthy
do, I phoned my provider lawyer to ask how I should respond to this. She advised me the
steps to take. These steps brought a response from the collection agency that was still
unsatisfactory to me. Consequently I called my provider lawyer a SECOND time and then
received further direction. I followed those instructions and, this morning, received an offer
for settlement which I found agreeable. I have now issued a cheque for $159.13 and am
grateful to my provider lawyer for their help. True, I saved only $19.22, but I would not have
known the specific steps to take to save myself that $19.22 without my lawyer providing me
with those specifics. It really feels great having a lawyer there for me, just like the wealthy,
even for $19.22.

Credit Issue

Leanne and I ran into a some problems, a few years back, dealing with huge amounts of debt. Well, the problem was cleared up and pretty straight forward, so we thought. A few years later, the debt was supposedly cleared up, and the appropriate credit reporting branches forwarded the information. However, it came back to haunt us.

I had made numerous personal phone calls, becoming frustrated with the situation and getting nowhere. When I finally called the people who were dealing with our issue, my patience had worn thin and I was down to the last straw. I did what I should have done, earlier on, and told them that if the issue was not cleared up, they would be hearing from my lawyer, and I abruptly hung up. They must have detected, in my voice, that I
meant business and that I did have a lawyer. I had a much stronger level of confidence, just knowing that I do have a lawyer available, if I choose to use him. A short while later, I made, yet another inquiry about this situation and discovered that all of the proper documents had been forwarded and processed.

Note: I did not call the law firm, but just mentioning, with conviction, that I would be calling my lawyer, was all I needed to get the response I was seeking. We have a great deal of "Peace of Mind" with PPL!

  Telephone Advice

I'm a new member and associate. I just phoned the provider law firm
for the first time this past Friday.  I phoned regarding my son's father,
who I need to sign his birth certificate papers so that I can obtain his
Indian status from the government. I am unable to do this without his
signature.
The lawyer called me back within two hours, however I was not home.
He then called me the next day, I was out again.  He called for the third
time and got a hold of me.  He did not know the answer, but gave me
his name, my file number and told me that if he was unable to reach
me by Wednesday, to call him and see what has happened.

He was very up front and honest, and I know that I will still receive the
advice I need to pursue this case.

  Clothing Refund

A close friend of mine purchased a Pant Suit, valued at $ 385.00,

from a well known Ladies fashion store, for a Christmas party at work .
The pants to the outfit were a little big but the sales lady said they
could easily be taken in.

The suit was bought in London Ontario, and she lives in Burlington.
When she took the pants to the seamstress, they did not want to
touch the pants as they couldn't guarantee the outcome due to the
lining and material and this would have cost her another $ 40.00 and
with a good chance of her not being pleased with the job.

As time was running out, she then had to purchase a new suit.  When
she went to return the original suit to a store in Mississauga, she was
told that they could not refund her the money, only give her a credit, as
it was a "Holiday Outfit."  She asked to speak to the Manager and, when
the manager told her the same story, she told the manager she was a
member of Pre-Paid Legal Services and was going to have her Lawyer
contact the store.  Within minutes the Manager was handing her the
refund, in full, and apologizing for any inconvenience.

This was due to the power of saying "I will have my lawyer contact you."

Document Review

My name is Nate Toevs. I have owned my Pre Paid Legal Plan
for 18 months now. Fortunately, I have not had any serious issues
to deal with. However, I have already used my membership, on
several occasions, for advice and consultation. I was just wanting
to know what my rights were. It was very comforting and helpful.

I have also used the service for document review, which, before
PPL, was not an option for me. I am very pleased with the value
and peace of mind that my P.P.L. Legal Care of Canada Corp.
membership represents to me.

Peace-Of-Mind for Mom

I have a Power of Attorney on my mother's affairs and she was concerned

that the Power of Attorney was not an "enduring" one, meaning, "Power of
Attorney over medical decisions." I faxed the documentation to my P.P.L.
Provider Law Firm and received a return call, immediately, telling me that,
not only was everything covered, but it was actually one of the best Powers
of Attorney that he had seen. I called my mother and reassured her that the
P.O.A. was an enduring one and she relaxed.

Our membership has provided peace of mind! Thank you PPL.

Divorce Issue

A close family member was going through a fairly hectic divorce.
It was costing a great deal of money and the situation was not
being handled correctly. The family member then proceeded to
obtain a Pre-Paid Legal membership which was quickly used,
the following day, and a lawyer was able to take the case, right
away. The family member then removed his previous lawyer from
the case and retained the services of our British Columbia provider
law firm, Watson, Goepel, Maledy. The short of this is that he saved
about $6,000.00, right away. Meanwhile the other side was paying into
their lawyer, who appeared to be taking them to the cleaners.

Contract Amended

I volunteer with a charity in Durham, Ontario, Canada and am the Treasurer.
We have just had to hire a telemarketer to raise funds. The last time we did
so, we did not ask a lawyer to review the agreement, and we ended up in big
problems. This time we had Pre-Paid Legal Care of Canada's Ontario provider
law firm, Mills and Mills, review the document. They made several changes
that really protected us, as the contract submitted, by the other party, had
only their interests protected. We were advised that some of the clauses
would have put us in serious jeopardy. Not now. The other party accepted all
that we wanted with no arguments at all!! The care and time that Mills and Mills
extended to us and spent on the phone with us was amazing. I've never had this
experience with any law firm in Canada. You know, it's amazing how often you'll
phone a lawyer, to ask a question, when there is NO EXTRA COST. I am totally
sold on my membership and believe that everyone truly needs this. We just have
to show people how to use the service and benefit themselves and their families.

We need to be on a mission!!

Family Law / Divorce

I have been a happy PPL member since it's launch in BC in July,1999 and cannot express the satisfaction and peace of mind this membership brings to me. This past year my husband and I separated and immediately I turned to our Provider Law Firm for advice and guidance. The quality of service I received was Exceptional!  Initially I received a call back by Christine Alexander, one of the highly noted family Lawyers our firm employs. She called within minutes and took great care and attention in explaining the legalities behind Divorce. Over the next couple of weeks I spent countless numbers of hours in consultation with Christine and, being aware of my busy schedule she went above and beyond the call of duty by calling me on "my time", some nights as late as 10:00 P.M. from her home. Wow talk about service!..and value!!  At the going hourly rate lawyers charge per hour, this would not have been an option for me. My concerns were alleviated immediately and things are running smoothly now because I know I have this valuable piece of protection.

I find this membership to be one that has helped me and many others improve the quality of our lives by making us sharper, more informed, and efficient  individuals.  Just the confidence, alone, behind making smarter decisions in life has provided a tremendous sense of Peace in my life.
Living a Pro-active vs. reactive lifestyle  enables each and every one of us to accomplish more in life!...Thank-you Pre-Paid Legal for making "Equal Justice for All" a reality.

Auto Accident Justice

I am 20 years old and live in Langley, BC.  One year ago, I was driving my mother's car.  As I approached a hairpin corner, a truck had cut the corner off and there was nowhere for me to go. I hit the driver's side rear tire. My car stopped dead in the road... which turned out to be lucky as I had to phone my dad (dad's are great in an emergency) and he came and tied up my bumper.  Dad asked me if I had finished exchanging information with the other driver and I said that the guy figured we could just fix our own vehicles and it wasn't necessary.  Dad looked at mom's car (about 10 inches from my side of the road)  and said that it looked like it wasn't my fault at all and that we definitely should exchange information.  He made a blueprint of the scene and took pictures to show that I was definitely on MY side of the road.. before we moved the car.

After three weeks of discussions back and forth, our auto insurance company said "sorry, there are no witnesses so unfortunately there is nothing we can do".
They were going to charge us:
full deductible fee.................................................................$  200.00
an "at fault" crash fee...........................................................$  250.00
Loss of my 5 year safe driving........................... approx. cost $2000.00 over 5 years
Dad said "Let's phone the provider attorney and see if they can help us."
They called us back within 5 hours and said dad had done everything right.  He suggested that dad call the insurance company back and ask them to fax a copy of my mom's policy to him personally at the firm. He called them at the close of the business day with the lawyer's name and the firm's fax number.
They phoned my mom at work before 9:00 AM the next day and said they had had another meeting and felt that, even though there were no witnesses, they believed that it wasn't my fault and they would now "waive" the $250.00 "at fault" crash fee, they would also "waive" the 5 year safe driving discount and they would only charge us $100.00 deductible. What a change in attitude!
One phone call and a savings of $2350.00!!
If we didn't have our PrePaid Legal Membership, we would have just handled it ourselves!
It is SO TRUE, that If you don't know your Rights...you really don't have any!

Equine Law

I was a horse trainer in the Langley area for many years.  Just this
summer I was asked by some clients to help them sell their horse. Although I
was know longer selling horses I agreed to help them find an appropriate and experienced trainer to help sell their horse. I was very confident with
their horse for I had had a lot of experience with the horse over the past 6
years. After a month in my barn I moved the horse to a barn that was
recommended to me by another trainer as an excellent place to promote the
horse because the horse was worth a substantial amount of money and this
trainer specialized in the field necessary to sell this horse.  I placed the
horse in the care of the trainer for that barn.

About 4 weeks later I received a phone call to come and pick up the horse
for it had badly injured someone.  I immediately phoned the owners and we
picked up the horse that evening after dark.  Immediately the next day I
began to get phone calls from the injured party's lawyer, insurance agents,
veterinarians hired by the injured party's lawyer to come and examine the
horse.  I had no idea who to talk to, what questions to answer, what to say
and what not to say, and who I should allow on the property to examine the
horse, as I had not even had time to find out what had happened at the
accident.

I phoned our law firm and explained what had happened and I received a
phone call back from one of the lawyers.  Once I explained my situation she
had me fax all the contracts, waiver forms, and my statement to her for
verification.  Being a very serious situation, she brought the situation to
the attention of one of the senior partners in the firm and with their
guidance and instructions I began answering questions, and allowing certain
people on the property to examine the horse.

I had never had anything like this happen before and my membership to Pre
Paid Legal gave me exactly what I needed and that was peace of mind,
guidance, and experienced legal advice!  I have now had many phone calls
with both lawyers and have never received a bill.  There is no doubt that I
will keep this membership forever.
Thank you to the law firm and to Pre Paid Legal.

  Cheque Processing

Now, as a member and associate with Prepaid Legal, I could tell you all about the prompt, efficient and courteous service I have received from our provider lawyers...however...I won't...instead, let me tell you about my wife, Shelly, who was, shall we say, the least bit...skeptical, about how well Pre-paid Legal should work...one day, she was depositing her pay cheque at her bank, and the teller said, "Of course, we will have to hold this cheque for two weeks, you realize." Not a good thing to say to my wife, who does not suffer fools gladly, at the best of times. She politely asked why. "It's our policy." Then she asked why they simply could not call the credit union, and confirm that the cheque was good. "Oh, no, we can't do that, we have to hold the cheque." Then my wife looked the teller in the eye and said, "That cheque is to pay our rent this month. If you and your bank seek to hold my cheque for two weeks, and cause me not to pay my rent, then we're all gonna sit down, you, me, and your supervisor, and you can explain to MY LAWYER, exactly why you can't do that..." The teller blinked, swallowed, apologized, and deposited the cheque, without involving her supervisor.

Give you three reasons why both Shelly and I LOVE Prepaid Legal 1) It works. 2) It works and 3) It works. Any questions? Call me. Better yet, call my wife.

Sincerely, truly, and very happily

Yacht Warranty Issue

A new PPL Legal Care of Canada member purchased a yacht, a year ago, and one of the motors kept giving him trouble. He called the manufacturer "many" times, with just a lot of frustration and about twenty-five faxes.

He purchased a membership with PPL Legal Care of Canada Corp. and, within days, called "his" lawyer. His lawyer communicated with the Motor Manufacturer and they offered to pay back to the member, half of the value of the engine.

This was UNACCEPTABLE to the Member, so he called his lawyer again and discussed the situation.
They informed the Motor Manufacturer that they would see them in court. The lawyer was going to guide the Member through Small Claims Court.

Instantly, the Motor Manufacturer said they would reimburse the Member with $7000.00, the full value!

Another very satisfied member.

Dream Solution to Auto Insurance Nightmare

I don’t usually let my auto insurance lapse, but on May 2 my insurance ended and Murphy’s Law hard at work, on May 3 I backed into a lady’s car in Overwaitea parking lot.  I gave her my insurance information, not remembering until going to bed that my insurance had expired!

She went to ICBC, who called me and I admitted that it was my fault.  After a few days, the cost to replace her door came in at $639.

On trying to figure out how I was going to pay it, I remembered I have PPL, it seemed a good time to test out the service.

The lawyer helped me with how to speak to the ICBC adjuster.

She also informed me that at their discretion, an insurance company could give me something called ‘relief against forfeiture’, and allow my insurance to extend a day to cover me.

I was unable to get through to the ICBC adjuster.  She was not interested in hearing why I thought “relief against forfeiture” applied to this situation (I am wheelchair bound, living on bare subsistence level of money and have never let my insurance lapse before, in 30 years of insuring vehicles).

She was not interested in hearing anything, so I was instructed to call her supervisor, who was even more hard-nosed.  Absolutely no way, even if it was only 15 minutes after midnight, I was not covered and that was that.

I called Alison back at my provider law firm, said, I can’t get anywhere.

A few days later, I received a copy of a very polite letter, which the lawyers had sent to ICBC, stating my case.

A few days later I received a letter informing me that they had made a phone call to the area supervisor and ICBC was covering me for the accident.  “Strictly good will”, they said.  But notice they gave good will when the lawyers asked for it, not when I did.

It’s peace of mind to know I have help dealing with these otherwise expensive mistakes and issues that come along once in awhile, no matter how careful we think we are.

Cell Phone Warranty Issue

A businessman needed his cell phone for constant connection with his office and customers. He was having difficulties with his cell phone and called the distributor to express his problem. The cell phone company informed him that his phone was still under warranty and suggested that he "just bring it in". He did so, and within a day, they informed him that his warranty had expired and the repairs to the phone would cost him $179.00. He told them that he could buy a new phone for that amount, so he would just come by and pick up his old phone. The dealer informed the man that, since they had "inspected" his phone, there would be a $65.00 charge.

He told them that they would be hearing from his lawyer. He had just become a PPL member, two weeks earlier, and didn't think that he would find any use for the service.  He called the law firm. The lawyer called the dealer .. the dealer called the new member IMMEDIATELY, and told him that a NEW phone would be "couriered" to his home within 48 hours!!

The member is now using his new phone and has proof that his membership provides great value!

Tenant Problem

As a PPL Legal Care of Canada member since 1999, I have used my membership
on numerous occasions and have been a very satisfied customer. I would like to share one of my legal situations with you.

My tenant gave a two week written notice that he was vacating the basement suite he was renting from me, with the option to stay if he desired, "as per the residential tenancy laws" of B.C. This notice was given on the 15th of September, although his rent was paid on the first of the month. I immediately called the provider law firm to find out what my rights were as a landlord. A lawyer from the firm promptly called me back and I explained the situation to him. He told me there were two errors in my tenants notice to vacate, the first being a 30 day notice is required to vacate. Secondly, notice can only be given on the due date of the rent specified on the Residential Tenancy Agreement, which in this case was the first of the month. The lawyer then recommended I give a written response to his notice, noting the above errors.

When I delivered the notice to my tenant, I told him that I had consulted with my lawyer (you should have seen his face) and that his notice was illegal. I told him that he could not give notice until October 1st, and therefore rent was required IN FULL for October. My tenant complied with all the requirements, and I received the rent of $550.00 on the 1st of October along with proper 30 day notice.

But, that wasn't the end of it............

I also gave my tenant 24hr notice to enter the suite for an inspection, as I had planned to show the suite the following week and wanted to ensure it was still in good condition and suitable to show. I noticed that the end of the carpet in the living room had frayed quite bad, like someone or something was chewing on it. ( He had a young dog that was quite hyper.) This carpet was only 10 months old and I brought the damage to the tenants attention. He denied responsibility and said it was "cheap carpet" and blamed the
installers for a bad installation, and even suggested it was normal wear and tear. He then offered to repair it himself just to be a "nice guy." I declined the offer and told him I would get a carpet repair company to do the work and deduct it from his damage deposit, and completed the
inspection.

The next evening I called him to let him know I had somebody coming to fix the carpet and he said he already fixed it. I went down and looked at it and it looked worse than before! He then told me that he called the Renting-Landlord Information line and was advised by them that he could do the repairs himself, and then I could NOT deduct his damage deposit.

Once again I phoned the provider law firm and received legal advice. He told me my tenants claims of being within his rights to perform the work himself was untrue. I was instructed by the lawyer to take photos of the carpet, go ahead and have the repairs done PROPERLY, and give the tenant a letter stating how much his damage deposit would be deducted for the repairs. The cost of the repairs was $80.

So, because of my membership, and under the advice of two GREAT lawyers, I was able to successfully collect $550.00 for rent in October, PLUS rightfully charge $80.00 for carpet repairs!

If I didn't have my Pre-Paid Legal Membership, I would have tried to handle the situation on my own, without the confidence of knowing my rights, and the outcome may have been different!

Thank-you PPL Legal Care of Canada for the "PROTECTION, SECURITY, and PEACE
OF MIND!"

Property Share Recovered

In 1994 I rode away from my common law husband, my 280 acre farm and my 2 teenage daughters, on my youngest daughter’s bicycle, with $80 in my purse and a change of underwear in my coat pocket.  A week later we talked and I was determined “this time” I wouldn’t go back to him.  I was also determined to have our properties and belongings tallied up.  I signed a separation agreement stamped by a notary public, witnessed by 3 other people, and put through the Supreme Courts.  He asked if he could have 5 years to pay and I agreed. Five years passed and the agreement wasn’t fulfilled.  I wrote him and it was ignored.  I left it for about 10 months then finally joined PPL and had a lawyer write a letter to him.

Within 30 days I was paid.

Warranty For Vehicle

I have been a member with Pre-Paid since they opened in July of 1999.  The first time I used Pre-Paid was in the spring of 2000.  We had bought a new Ford pick-up, within 6 months the rear bumper was rusting which I informed the dealership of.  I was told that they would check with the manufacturer and get me a new bumper.

After a month I still had not heard anything so I called the dealership.  I was told that this was a major problem with this model.  The manufacturer could not provide us with a new bumper at this time, as it was the material they were using too construct this bumper that was causing the problem and they had not rectified this as of yet.  Therefore, if they were to give me a new bumper the same problem could occur.

This was not satisfactory to me, I just wanted a new bumper and I wanted it NOW, if the new bumper did rust again, then in 6 months I would want another new bumper until this problem did not occur anymore.  It was not my problem that the manufacturer could not provide a proper bumper.  The dealership did not seem to agree, so as I hung up the phone I advised them that I would be contacting Pre-Paid Legal and my Lawyer would be contacting them.

This was already after closing time with Pre-Paid, so I was planning on calling them in the morning.  The next morning at 9:15 the dealership phones to tell me they have contacted the manufacturer and a bumper would be here next Friday for my truck.  Just using Pre-Paid's name gave me the results I needed, I didn't even have to call them. I was very pleased knowing I had a membership that Provides such a great service for so little dollars.  Pre-Paid Legal has saved me Time, Stress and Given me Peace of Mind.

I Found many REASONS to Call the Law Firm

When I first joined Pre-Paid Legal I didn’t think I had any need to call a lawyer. I have found a number of times to use my new Pre-Paid Legal Membership. First there was the big problem of a neighborhood dog left alone in an apartment to bark and bark until late in the night. A lawyer called me back and outlined my legal rights, in the municipality where I live, and the steps that were available to remedy this situation.

Next I inquired about bonding, since I was doing some house sitting, over the holidays. I wanted to find out if bonding was necessary and what the possible costs would be. A lawyer called me back and explained all about the bonding issue.

Lastly I considered leasing a computer. The lawyer called me back and discussed the pros and cons of this and what to look for in such a typical lease agreement. I decided not to go this route, and save myself some money. A month later I received a letter from Watson Goepel Maledy stating that they had not received the documents for review. I was impressed that they had opened a file awaiting my lease agreement.

I will continue to call when I need answers and don’t know my choices or rights. For me, the greatest benefit is just knowing I can get good unbiased information to help me make better decisions. This gives me a sense of peace and security because decision making has always been a big deal. Now, it is easier, I just get the facts, straight, and the decisions are made much easier. This is allowing me to lead a more proactive life instead of always responding to situations or even getting myself into a jam, before I seek help.

I am now in the process of doing my will. I plan to use my membership every opportunity I get and I am sure life will become easier and easier.

Video Purchase Refund

I love this service !! I purchased, via the television, two of those
"funny" home video tapes for $19.95 + $6.95 S. & H. I received the tapes
in a very flimsy non-padded plastic like envelope. One of the tapes, had
a broken case on it rendering it unviewable and the other tape was made
with such poor quality, every time you would fast forward or rewind the
tape, the tape would get all gobbled up in the machine. So, bottom line,
I was sent junk! After finding a non toll free number to the company, I
called and told the customer service person of the scenario along with
my request for a complete refund. She advised me that the company's
policy was to not refund the shipping and handling part of the cost.

I explained that I could understand that policy if I was just not satisfied with
the videos, but that I was sent "junk". I asked to speak with a supervisor, she
put me on hold and came back and said that she had spoken with a supervisor and that the company policy would stand. I asked for their mailing address and hung up.

Well, I called our provider firm and spoke with an attorney and he composed
a letter to the company stating that the company was in violation of Oregon's
Unlawful Trade Practices Act and that they may have violated several Federal laws as well and that he recommended that they credit the full amount, plus the cost of S & H, plus send a call tag for the video's to be returned to them at no cost to me.

I checked our voice mail today and there was a message from a representative of the company apologizing all over herself, asking me to overlook this incident and that she was crediting the full amount back to my credit card and to just keep the video's. YES!!!!!!!!!!
Again, I LOVE THIS SERVICE !
Thanks,

Time-Share Issue

In the four months that we have had our membership, we have called  our
provider law firm two times.  Before Pre-Paid Legal, we would never have
dreamed of calling an attorney just to get advice.  The peace of mind is
worth more than the membership fee.  The story we would like to share,
however, is about how we didn't even need to actually call the firm. We
own a timeshare property that we were trying to trade. We did what is
called a "request first trade", so that if nothing were, available where we
wanted to go, we would still be able to use our week at our home
resort.  We had followed all the rules and read all the fine print.
Imagine our surprise when we found that we had been confirmed into a
resort that we had not requested. When I called, they agreed that a
mistake had been made, but our week at our home resort had already been
given out. After some negotiating, they assured me that they would make
it right. About that time, we learned that our oldest son is getting
married in August.  I gave them several resort choices, but indicated
that it had to be an August 11th check-in, as that is when  their
honeymoon is.  Sure enough, they were confirmed for August 18th!  By
this time, we were beside ourselves.  When I called again, I mentioned
that this was not the first time a mistake was made, and that perhaps
the best thing for us to do would be to refer the matter to our
attorney. Within 48 hours, they were confirmed into a 5-star resort with
a larger unit than we requested, for the 11th of August.

It is so nice to know that there is someone to turn to when your rights are
being violated.

Review Of Tenancy Lease

I talked to my PPL Legal Care of Canada lawyer regarding a lease - in his opinion, based on what pieces I had read to him over the phone, he said DO NOT sign that lease - never in his practice has he ever told someone not to sign a contract, but in my case, he felt it necessary to tell me.  He had advised that terms that contradicted the Residential Tenancy Act would be null and void, so we'd be protected by the Act for those items, but for other items (such as indemnifying the landlord for everything), it would not be in our best interest to deal with that landlord.  After that, I went to the Residential Tenancy Office and had an information officer review the document with me, to find out that he wouldn't sign the document either....

I asked the property manager to "clarify" some of the points, just so I could understand the intent behind them - basically she said that she got a feeling of "mistrust" from us and that it's not a good way to start a business relationship....

I am very pleased to have had access to a professional opinion before committing myself by " signing on the dotted line". Another example of the great value of having a PPL Legal Care Of Canada membership!!

  #57 - Age Discrimination

Three years ago I purchased a townhouse in Surrey. I was 50 years old and single at the time of my purchase. I was aware that the Strata was "adult oriented" and being an "adult" it never occurred to me that this word "adult"  would cause me a tremendous amount of anxiety.

In the spring of 1999, a year after purchasing my townhouse, I became engaged to a wonderful women who was 39 years of age. As we were to be married the following year, I mentioned to one of our elected Council that I was going to have my finance's name placed on the title as a joint owner of my townhouse.  I was told, under no uncertain terms, could I do this because my finance, Adrienne, was under 45 years of age and doing so would contravene the by-law which restricted ownership to 45 + years. I was told that if I proceeded the Council could impose hefty fines and could if warranted force me to sell my home. I was shocked, and told the Council Member that this was blatant age discrimination and wouldn't get past the BC Human Rights Commission let alone the Courts. He told me yes it would and that as far as he knew the age by-law had never been tested in the Courts but I was "happy to try, if I wanted."  I called the Human Rights Commission and was told that there was nothing they could do as the Act did not cover age discrimination when it came to ownership, only tenancy.  I could not afford to hire expensive lawyers to argue my rights especially if it ended up in the Supreme Court of Canada.  It was then I realized that the law and justice did not mean the same thing.

We became Members of Pre-Paid Legal in July 1999 and in late spring of 2000 we had our Wills completed by our provider firm Watson, Goepel, Maledy. One of the provisions of my Will was to leave my townhouse to my finance. The only problem was that if I died before Adrienne turned 46, she would not be permitted to live in her home and would be forced to move.  This in my opinion this was totally unjust and it caused us a lot of stress because we believed there was nothing we could do about it.  We were wrong.

Pre-Paid Legal Membership is there to be used so in January of this year, I called Watson, Goepel Maledy and spoke with Christine Alexander. After explaining my problem, Christine advised me that she was of the opinion that the new BC Strata Titles Act forbade any elected strata council from dictating who or whom an owner could sell his/her property or interest in that property. She further advised that she would confer with her colleagues in their Real Estate division to make sure her opinion was correct.  Three days later Christine faxed me a letter and a copy of the Act advising that our by-law was not enforceable and that Watson Goepel Maledy would be pleased to handle the title change of ownership of our townhouse into both of our names.  I gave this letter to our Council and was told to proceed "quietly" with the transfer of title as they did not want to get involved in a drawn out legal dispute.

Thanks to Christine Alexander and her colleagues at Watson Goepel Maledy our legal rights and financial interests were protected.

#58 - Value of the 25% Attorney Discount

Here is a story which I wrote to someone regarding a situation they were facing. They were facing a court case from a previous dilemma and were going to need to go to a Public Defender. They wanted to know how to use their membership in light of this.

We had a situation that arose this last summer. My 18 year old son got a wild hair and decided to get into trouble. We really didn't have any money to deal with hiring an attorney. We didn't want to rely on a public attorney, for obvious reasons, and needed the best that there was. We called our Pre-Paid Attorney firm and they referred us to a local Attorney to meet with. Prior to this situation, I always felt uncomfortable selling the 25% discount portion of the membership plan.. I guess it really didn't hit home until this situation arose. This really became the most important part of the membership to our family.

The attorney sat down with our family and gave us all the time in the world. We explained to him that we really didn't have the money at all to deal with this and asked what our options were, if any. He told us that his fee for a case like this was $5,000.00 but would give us, not the required 25% discount, but 50% discount for his services. He went on to tell us that he would break the fee up into payments. Coming up with the first payment, still meant a real challenge for us, but somehow it all came about.

We were fortunate to go with this guy. He was really an impressive sight, when stacked against many of the less proficient attorneys we saw, as we sat in the court room, over the next couple of months.

Pre-Paid Legal works only with, what is known as, "A/V" rated attorneys. (only %10 of the attorneys in this country have this type of rating). I think, in your case, you should defiantly call Pre-Paid and set up an appointment with a local attorney. It won't cost you a thing, as a member. When you sit down with this person, get as much information as you can.... You will be lucky to meet and discuss your situation with a public defender to this degree. Arm yourself with as much information as you can get, so if, indeed you have to use a Public Defender, you can press them toward the direction of your choosing - not theirs.

What are my options? You have got to know this... and there is no better place to start then with your PPL attorney.

By the way, my son was facing 3 felonies, one of which was a strike. - The court was looking at giving him 3 years hard time. Instead he got 4 months home detention. His attorney will approach the court in two years to have his now 1 felony taken off the record without any additional cost. A couple of months later, we were a little short on a payment that had to be made to the court, for the monitoring equipment. We called the attorney about our options. He offered to loan us the $100.00 if we needed it... can you believe that? The money came in from a different direction so we didn't need to borrow the money after all.

As for our son's attitude, this brush with what could have been has definitely cleared his thinking. He is now finishing up his last year in high school and is taking one college course.

Thank you Pre-Paid Legal

#59 - A Teenager With His Own Lawyer

My thirteen year old son found a large amount of money ( for a 13 year-old) and immediately brought it home to show me. I told him that we would hang onto it and see if anyone lost it and then we would "do the right thing". I needed to leave town for a week and when I returned I was informed that my son was "interviewed" by the school, as his name was brought up involving this money. Apparently, the money was given to a student to pay for a band trip and  the student said they handed it to the teacher, no receipts, just cash. The money was reported missing and my son's name came up.

As soon as I heard this I called Pre-Paid Legal. My teenage son's lawyer called  back in 30 minutes and I explained the situation. He indicated that we were totally within our rights to keep the money because there was no identification and my son had a witness when he found the money. I indicated that my son said he would rather give the money back because some poor kid would be missing out on his trip or something and he didn't want that. I was proud of him for thinking that way but the lawyer said "be careful." The lawyer indicated that I should meet with the teacher and the principal and ensure that everyone was in agreement that my son's actions were voluntary and not an admission of stealing the money or something of that nature. I was VERY comfortable with the facts, when I met with the teacher and principal. If the conversation hadn't gone the way I wanted, I had the power to say, " Well, my son's law firm, from Vancouver, will be contacting you to take this to the next step". I'm thankful it didn't come to that and my son now has learned, at a very early age, that he has the ability to check his rights and not let anyone take advantage of him. It felt good to stay calm and keep that "trump card" in my pocket in case the situation didn't go our way.
My son received a "thank-you" from the school and the teachers and he is very proud of how this all turned out.

What a GREAT feeling to know that we never have to wonder if we are doing the right thing, EVER AGAIN IN OUR LIVES!!

#60 - Life Insurance Dispute

I have had life Insurance since I was 18 years old and always felt it a necessity. I had been approached, a number of years back, by a representative from another company. He told me that I had paid enough into my policy to have a fully paid up one with his company. I said if you bring me that back in writing we have a deal.

As the years went by, I had no problem, until that company merged with another. After the merger, every year we would get a bill and a threat of cancellation, if we didn’t pay. Each year I had to negotiate to carry on.

Well finally this became too nerve racking and I said "that's enough!" I called the company this time and said "I want out." Now I really didn’t know where I was, and they wouldn’t give me straight answers. It was then that I decided to call my Pre-Paid Legal Lawyer. I received help from two lawyers in the Vancouver office. They asked me to write a letter to the Insurance Company and they would review it. I did this and they made a call to the Insurance Company and assured me that I would be dealt with, within one month.

A month and a half went by and nothing had happened. I was mad and didn't know what to doI picked up the phone and called the Pre-Paid Legal customer support line and told them I was really annoyed. They, in turn, phoned the lawyers.  The lawyer got back to me, in a few minutes, and you could tell that she was a little annoyed that the Insurance Company had not done what they said they were going to do.  She phoned them immediately, called me back and told me that the Insurance Company would be back to me, the same day, by fax, reporting when our money was coming and how much I would be receiving.  Well, the fax came and I could have fallen over. The amount we were receiving had now gone up by over $4000.00!! We received our cheques within the time the fax stated.

It gets even better! The lawyer assured me that, because of "de-mutualizing", we would get to keep our shares in the Life Insurance Company. Yes, today we still have our shares and the share value has gone up to the amount we have taken out.

THANK YOU TO PRE-PAID LEGAL  and  THE GREAT HELP FROM THE PROVIDER LAW FIRM IN VANCOUVER.

#61 - Estate Settlement

I joined PPL when it first came to B.C. in July ’99 and have used the lawyer referral system several times with great success.  The lawyers have got back to me quickly – once in an hour and a half.

I have used the lawyer referral system to settle both parents’ estates and found sympathy and understanding at an emotional time.

#62 - Small Business Use

I own a travel agency and recently American Airlines sent us a debit memo (basically a charge back), stating that although their agent had authorized a waive of a penalty on a client, who had to change a flight, due to the cancellation of one of AA’s flights because of weather.  When we queried the debit memo, AA stated that their agent didn’t have the authority to waive a penalty.  Despite all of our arguments, AA was adamant and this involved some $450.00 U.S. Dollars.  It was like talking to a post and after exhausting all our arguments; I enlisted the help of our Provider Law Firm.  A lawyer called me back and after I faxed her all the details she wrote a letter to the individual we had been dealing with at American.

A.A. ignored us all.  I wrote a 4-page letter and accompanied it with all supportive data plus the Lawyers letter and sent copies to several people in American Airlines including the President.  Although I got a letter back from the President’s Assistant, basically telling me that he was above all that mundane detail, a couple of weeks later we received a letter stating that for this time only as a special concession they would waive the penalty. Although the Lawyers letter maybe wasn’t the “Magic Bullet” to accomplish this result, it was a significant part, because this is only the 2nd time in 20 years that we’ve had a debit memo rescinded. Thank You Prepaid Legal.

#63 - Family & Property

The only time I had used a lawyer, before joining Prepaid Legal Services, was for Real Estate dealings, even when I got entangled in a serious issue.  Now anytime I have a question about any issue, I pick up the phone and call our Provider Law Firm.

The feeling of having a great team of lawyers to back me up is an awesome feeling.  I have talked to a couple of different lawyers on a family issue and a property ownership issue.  They discussed and advised me with different options, talking to me for over an hour.

  #64 - Product Delivery Mishap

In December, 1 week before Christmas, I bought my daughter a Pine dresser from a pine furniture store.  Upon delivery Dec. 23rd, the delivery person from the store bumped and chipped the dresser.

When I called the shop, they offered me stain to cover the chip.  I told them that was unacceptable since I bought it brand new and insisted on having it replaced – they agreed to do that within 2 weeks.  I called every week and got excuses as to why it wasn’t coming – finally I said that I thought they were hoping it would go away and that if I didn’t have it by Feb. 3rd I would be consulting with my Legal Provider – guess what – it was delivered the morning of Feb. 3rd!! I didn’t even have to make the call – just knowing I had the power gave me Peace of Mind.

  #65 - Discrimination At Work

Last November, I had an encounter with one of our Managers in the office.  It was an incident of discrimination at the work place.  Although, I have used the services of the lawyers many times already, the idea of the lawyers did not come to my mind at the moment of the incident.  It was only after a few hours that I realized I have somebody to call – the Lawyers.  I called the Provider Firm and after just 10 minutes the Lawyer called back, and was advising me what I should do and what not to do.  It was a great help and peace of mind for me to be able to get advice right away.

Having a lawyer, also gives me an advantage with other people.  I’m able to talk with sense and know that I will always be treated fairly in any situation.

#66 - Verbal Bullying

I was driving towards a busy intersection and when I arrived, I saw than an accident had taken place.  There was an ambulance at the corner and a police car on the other side.  I was already at the center of the street and there was no way for me to turn left or right, I tried to move slowly to get out of the way, but the police approached me and in a loud voice shouted at me and told me that my license will be revoked.  I wasn’t sure what my rights were, so I called the Law Firm and told them the story – the advice they gave me eased my mind and confirmed my rights as an innocent “by stander”.  Also, I have the Prepaid Legal Sticker on both sides of my windshield and I know that the Police Officer noticed them.

#67 - Internet Provider Problem

Rogers Cable is my Internet Provider.  I had a problem with my modem, a device used to convert signals from my computer to the Internet.  I had made an appointment for them to come out and replace my modem.  This appointment was made on a Sunday for a Thursday.  I use the Internet as a means of making contacts.  I took off half a day of work as the appointment was set for 11:00a.m.

At 10:45 a.m. I called to confirm that they were still coming out and I could alert work that I may need to take the full day off. At that time they stated that no appointment had been made.  Luckily, I took down the person’s name to which the appointment was made.  They got in touch with that personal and confirmed that it was made but could not come out until the next week.

I contacted my Provider firm, and my lawyer had instructed me on how to construct my letter for re-imbursement of lost wages.  About 3 weeks later I received by Cable bill and it had a credit for 3 months FREE service.  Thank you Pre-Paid Legal.

#68 - Setting Up My Own Contract

Being in the RV Business, I was asked by a retired friend of a friend to help him sell his Trailer.  We put it in the Buy & Sell, and the local papers without any results.  I eventually found a person who needed a trailer but didn’t have the whole amount of money to pay all at once, and asked if the owner would take payments.  The owner agreed, so I called our PPL Law Firm, and they gave me the advice on how to set up a contract and a payment schedule.  Everything was fine, until the couple decided to break up.  Because of the contract I had set up, with the Lawyers advice, I was able to get the trailer back without any hassle.  Also, the lady involved made 2 extra payments because of way the contract had been written.

#69 - Overcharge on Home Renovation

Peter Baldwin, a member/associate here in Goderich Ontario received a bill
from an out of town contractor who had done some renovations on   his home.
The bill was $11,000.00 more than they had agreed upon.  The contractor
wouldn't listen to reason and basically said, pay up or the work won't be
finished!  Peter sent the info on to our provider Law Firm of Mills and
Mills in Toronto and within a few days the bill was reduced by $6,000.00
with the balance of $5,000.00 still being discussed.  This one phone call
paid for Peter's membership virtually for the rest of his life!
Another local success story involved a couple who had gone to a car
dealership to upgrade their year old truck.  When the truck was inspected,
the couple was informed that their truck had not been new when they
purchases it but had been rebuilt.  They had paid a new vehicle price!!!
They too forwarded the info to Mills and Mills who, within the week, got
them a brand new truck, free of charge!  Actually, they had the choice of
the free vehicle or its equivalent value.
Truly Awesome!!!

#70 - Challenge With The Airlines

When making reservations to go home for the Christmas Holiday, my sister and I deliberately booked Business Class seating on the airline.  As a result of a skiing injury suffered several years ago, I find sitting in a confined space, such as behind the wheel of a car, or in economy seating, for longer than two hours at a stretch very uncomfortable, sometimes to the point of being painful.  So the larger seats are a necessity for me.

On the return from Halifax to Vancouver, our plane arrived in Toronto late, and we were hustled aboard our flight for Vancouver, but into economy seating.  It was not a pleasant flight.

On arriving in Vancouver, the first call I made was to our Provider Law firm.  I was advised to contact the airline myself, as they generally are open to resolving the issues.  That I did, and as requested by the airline, faxed a copy of our tickets and boarding passes to their customer service department.  We heard nothing back for almost 4 weeks, in spite of a request to be updated on the status of our request.  So I called the PPL lawyer back again.

She faxed a letter to the airline yesterday.  Today I received an email from the airline saying that they were refunding us over $513.60 and giving us two $100 credit vouchers for future use.

So far, in the year that I have been a Pre-Paid Legal member, I have now saved or collected close to $1,000 because of my membership, and have gotten advice on several other legal issues that have given me peace of mind as to my rights.  I believe that this issue is the fifth time I have gone to PPL for assistance.

#71 - My Lawyer Will Review The Contract

Over the years I have signed a number of contracts to do with my book publishing and writing business. In the past ... not wanting to pay hundreds of dollars for a lawyer to review the contracts ... I had spent considerable time and energy educating myself on contract law as it affects writers. On my last book contract, I also relied on the expertise of my New York literary agent.

I am now ready to turn that book into an eBook and market it over the Internet.

Once we got the legal service plan in BC -- with review of legal documents covered under the plan -- I sent our provider law firm that contract.  I learned, to my dismay, that the language in the contract was not clear and I may have inadvertently given away the electronic rights to one of my books.

You can be sure I will never again sign any kind of contract without sending it first to "my" lawyer.

#72 - Seeking Help From The Right Source

My husband and I, both, have worked in the Printing Industry for over 35 years, and have contributed to the same pension plan.  The Employees decided to leave the International Union and therefore the pension plan had to be wound down.  This wind down of our pension fund involved a substantial amount of money and so we called our Provider Law Firm here in Vancouver.  The Lawyer returned our call the following day and we mailed him the documents.  They couldn’t handle this particular case, but did advise us to seek help from an Investment Counselor.

Thanks to the Law Firm, we were able to go to the right source to get the help we needed, and were quite satisfied with the outcome.

#73 - My Will

After receiving my will kit with my membership, it took me many months to look at it.  Finally I began to fill it in.  I had just remarried and had 2 sons from a previous marriage and a little stepdaughter from my new marriage.  I had many questions regarding dividing up assets between my boys and my stepdaughter.  Also, there were issues about paying child support for my little stepdaughter if my husband predeceased me.  Also, I had problems doing the living will and needed input.  The power of attorney was another that I had many questions about.  I called our Provider Firm many times for answers.  They were always very prompt getting back to me.  Finally, I met with the lawyer in person and we signed the final papers.  I am thrilled that it has been completed and delighted with the fabulous service that I received as a Pre-Paid Legal member.

#74 - Ring Purchase

I purchased a ring from a “house party” sale.  After 1 year and 1 month – two stones fell out.  I gave it to my salesperson and she sent it back to the company for repair.  Three weeks later, it came back unfixed.  I gave it back to her.  She insisted it would be fixed.  She spoke to head office before she sent it back and was given reassurance that, even though it was just over the 1 year warranty, it would be honoured.  Well, it came back again – with a note saying, “the year was up – sorry”.

I then phoned the head office and spoke to a very rude girl. Got nowhere!  I wrote to head office and let them know that I wanted a new ring immediately or they would be dealing with my lawyers.  One week later I received a package with a new ring.  No note – no apology – just the ring.  I know it was my “referring” to them hearing from my lawyer that resulted in the ring being replaced.

My membership has truly empowered me to assert my rights.  I will never be without this membership.

#75 - Help With Our Vehicle Lease

We leased a Van a few weeks ago and being a PPL legal member we decided to have the law firm review the contract before we signed it.  The lawyer was great.  She spent time on the phone going through in detail each item on the contract – making sure I knew what the fine print meant to me.  I took over two pages of notes and we were able to change the contract in 3 places so we were protected.  This really gave us peace of mind to know we were and are protected. Thanks Watson, Goepel & Maledy!

  #76 - Fender Bender

My daughter had a slow fender bender into the back of a pickup with a huge hitch & U bar that caught her Toyota right at the radiator.  The car was a write off.  When we went to the British Columbia Insurance Corporation, they pushed the papers across and wanted Leila to sign them right then, offering her $1,800.00 for the car.  We said, “We’ll show this to our lawyer first.”  PPL told Leila to get three quotes from the local car dealers.  She did that, and when we went back to the Insurance Corporation, we received $800.00 more!!

#77 - Parking Ticket

On Sunday, February 18, 2001, my daughter Jennifer her boyfriend Chad and I, went to the Plaza of Nations in downtown Vancouver. We were checking out the “small business/franchise” booths that were set up.

Prior to going into the building, we, of course, had to pay the parking meter. We put enough in the first time to allow for two hours worth of parking time and then proceeded into the building. A little under two hours later, Jennifer and I returned to the car to feed the meter again, which amounted to over $7.00 worth of change, by then. About an hour later we decided to leave as we had seen everything we were interested in. Upon returning to the car, I could see I had a blue piece of paper on the windshield, as we were walking towards it. Yep, you guessed right, a stupid parking ticket. I was certain we should still have time left on the meter so I checked. The meter stated 1 minute left but, it should have said more than 15 minutes, that’s why I was so surprised to see the ticket in the first place!

I told my daughter and her boy friend I’d be calling the firm of Watson, Goepel and Maledy, first thing Monday morning, to see if there was anything I could do. The cost of the ticket was $37.45, and double that if not paid in 7 days! I live on a handicapped pension and truly can’t afford any extra costs at any time.

Just prior to 12:00 p.m. I called the firm, and a lawyer by the name of Shelina returned my call with-in 15-20 minutes. That’s impressive!  I gave the particulars and she advised me on what I should do and then gave me the file number I should quote upon my return call, in order to let her know what happened. I then followed her advise to the letter, contacting the towing company, Imperial Parking. I talked to a gentleman by the name of James and when we were done, my ticket had been cancelled!

Thank You Pre-Paid Legal Care of Canada; I’m so happy we have you to protect our rights! Equal access to Top Quality lawyers when you need them! Pre-Paid Legal Care of Canada Corporation truly does for lawyers bills, what our provincial medical plan does for doctors’ bills! They keep the costs within reach of the average person's income, thereby returning equal access to the legal system. Justice is not just for the rich any more!

#78 - A Walk In The Park

My Husband and I were walking our dog in the neighborhood one evening when suddenly after rounding the street corner a small, yappy doggy (unleashed) was nipping at our ankles.

Before we realized, our dog’s leash became entangled amongst our legs and before I knew it, I had fallen backwards on the pavement.  While my husband was checking to see if I was all right and calming our dog – the owner of the yappy dog called his pet and scooped it in his arms, ran into the house and turned off the house lights.

We were so shocked at his uncaring and disregard for us we returned home and wrote a letter stating how upset we were at his lack of concern, and enclosed our Prepaid Legal Business Card.

Next Day we received a beautiful bouquet of flowers, a thoughtful telephone call and hopefully soon a membership!  Could they have been afraid of the Lawyer? – YOU BET!

#79 - Abusive Husband

Three years ago one of our PPL members became involved with legal aid in an attempt to obtain a divorce from her abusive husband.  After fighting for two years and several trips to court, she still did not have her divorce.  She then hired a lawyer and made more trips to court but still no divorce.

We then introduced her to “Prepaid Legal”.  She eagerly became a member.  The law firm answered all of her questions and concerns and referred her to a law firm in Kelowna, B.C.  to complete the divorce.  Within a couple of months the case went to court, her divorce was finally completed.  She was elated and to also receive a 25% discount, she can now finally concentrate on raising her 3 young children.

#80 - Credit Card Stolen

My credit card was stolen on its way to me (in the mail).  I got a cal from the credit card company (bank) saying they’d recovered the card from someone’s car in Ontario.  Did I know anything about it?  I didn’t because I didn’t even know they were sending me a new one!

They said thanks and I hung up.  Two days later I received a registered letter from the bank asking me to sign an “affidavit” and return it to them.  It was in “legalize” of course and it looked like they just wanted me to swear that I knew nothing of the theft – but . . . I wasn’t sure.

I called our law firm and read it to the lawyer.  He said it was just a “cover your butt” letter from the bank and to go ahead and sign it!  I did and heard nothing more from them.

Now I probably would have signed it and sent it back before I had a PPL membership and had the same results, but, the difference was that this time I KNEW I had nothing to worry about!

#81 - Auto Accident

This is a simple story that had lots of impact for the member.   She was involved in an auto accident and knew that an RCMP agent was going to call her on the Saturday.  On Thursday she purchased a membership – Friday she talked to the lawyers so she was ready and able to have the confidence to talk to the RCMP office.

The lawyer relieved the fear of talking to the police.

#82 - Special Needs Child

I have a daughter with Special Needs that attended a resource program in a public school.  Over a period of time we noticed a big shift in her attitude – to the negative side.  We eventually found out that a teacher assistant was physically and verbally abusing our daughter.  We called the school and met with the principle and teachers.  Nothing was done.  We then called our Law Firm, and were instructed to call the police to investigate.  We did that and an investigation ensued.  The law firm was unbelievably helpful and we were happy with the results.

#83 - Car Broken Into

My most recent success story is around getting my 1993 Geo Metro’s door fixed after it was broken into in my parking lot.  My drivers door was all bent out from the top – about $600.00 worth of damage.  I have my PPL stickers and business cards taped to my car front and rear windows.  When I picked up my car it was so wonderful – the car door was fixed so well, the car painted on the whole side, plus the car was totally cleaned inside – just awesome!  Then, Ted the owner spent time going over everything they did, taking the door apart etc.  He said how he was really doing business to please his customers and doing lots of extras.  Plus they drove me home the first day and picked me up the second day – the service was total and excellent.  I left him a PPL brochure.  I don’t think I would have such good service if the stickers were not on my car.  It’s the Best service I have ever had on my car!!

#84 - Long Term Disability Claim

I was on short term disability because of a shoulder injury.  When it came time for long term disability coverage to kick in, my Insurance Company said that they were going to get in touch with my Dr. and get things happening.  After a month and a half I was still waiting for my cheque, and then I received a letter stating that my coverage was going to end because my Dr. had not sent the Insurance Company any information.

As you can guess, I was panicking, so I called my Dr. and asked him if he had received any correspondence from the Insurance Company. He said he hadn't.  This was not the first time they had said that letters were sent when they were not.

So enter my lawyers (I like to say that!).  I was coached on what to say and what to do and with the snap of my fingers the Insurance Company that was not even returning my calls, not only called, but apologized, and they had two cheques for me in two days!!!  Oh, and the letters to my Dr. just all of a sudden appeared at his office, 2 days later.  This help has paid for my membership for 15 years, and has given me the power to fight for my rights.

#85 - Speeding Ticket

In August of 1999 I was issued a speeding ticket on my way, with the family, to the PNE. In September 1999 I registered my desire to challenge the ticket. My feeling is to fight every one and so it becomes a zero-sum gain for the government but that is an aside. In January of 2001 I received notification that my case was set for March 6th of 2001. I felt that was an inordinate length of time before I could go to court, so I called PPL to ask about speedy trial legislation. I talked to Christine, who was wonderful, she told me about a web-site to check out and the procedure to fight the ticket on a constitutional challenge. I prepared the proper documents, re-scheduled the court date (Crown needed time to mount a defense) and faxed the challenge to the three (3) Crown Attorneys who have jurisdiction over a traffic ticket. Seems like a waste of our tax dollars doesn't it? I was a little nervous thinking I would be alone in court against three attorneys. The upshot is I received a letter from the Crown notifying me they weren't proceeding and that the charges were dropped. Without PPL I would have gone to court and hoped that the Police Officer wouldn't show up. I called Christine with my good news and she was grateful she could help. Not paying that ticket paid my PPL membership for the year.

Thank you

#86 - Tenant Relations

I had a tenant who decided he would give me one month written notice to vacate on the 3rd of the month, so he would be out of his suite by the 3rd of the next month.  He requested his security deposit refund, which he had never paid.  He stated that his “Uncle the Lawyer” would back his rights, although he “hated to take legal action against me.”  I called our Provider Law Firm . . . and within twenty minutes had a lawyer specializing in Tenant relations give me all the specifics. He gave me a web site to direct my Tenant to, and further, if he has a problem, our Provider Firm will be contacting his “lawyer” directly.

I told him all this – he was out on time with no further talk about his rights or his uncle the lawyer.  My call to PPL diffused the problem before it got out of hand.

#87 - Grandparents Visiting Rights

We contacted the provider firm to get help with grandparent’s visiting rights.  We discussed our concerns with the attorney.  We sent a letter that we had written.  The lawyer reviewed the letter and recommended alterations and additions.  We discussed our options.  Then we presented our concerns to our grandson’s mother.  She was highly impressed by our having a lawyer and being prepared to fight for our rights.  Discussion was initiated as to how we could have a win-win situation.  Circumstances moved so that we were able to see our Grandson twice in our travels at Christmas time.

#88 - International Real Estate

I phoned our provider law firm about a real estate deal in Atlanta, GA, USA (I live in Richmond, B.C.) I faxed the contract.  They researched the GA and BC Real Estate Acts and then advised me on what to do. I received my $2,000.00 fee from the transaction.

#89 - Income Tax

I contacted our provider law firm for an income tax problem.  They were able to provide me with the information I needed to put my mind at rest and take care of the situation.

#90 - Immigration Application

Last year we had to fill out the forms for the Immigration Application of my parents-in-law.  Despite the fact that the forms where fairly easy to fill out, we wanted them to be reviewed to be sure we did not miss anything that would delay the application process.  A lawyer from the provider firm reviewed them and then we sent them in.  It gave us great peace of mind!

#91 - Don't Let Your Friends Down !!

I am writing from a highly emotional state but I think it's something that needs to be said, the sooner the better, and every PPL Associate needs to hear it and pass it on to everybody they know.

I have just returned home from sitting up all night with a friend who just lost her husband.  I had been meaning to talk to them about PPL but had been putting it off, not wanting to impose on them when they had his illness to deal with.  (This is a common attitude with new Associates).

During the course of the evening she began to talk about things that she needed to attend to, i.e. the bank account and all the pre-authorized items going through it.  I suddenly froze and asked if he had a Will.  She said no, they never got around to do it.  I burst into tears and said "Oh, my God, Michele I'm so sorry!".  I told her I had wanted to talk to them but thinking they had enough to deal with, kept putting it off.  She ended up consoling me.  At least I had enough presence of mind to tell her not to tell the bank anything, as they have a joint account with both her paycheques and his pensions going through it, as well as preauthorized payments.  The bank would immediately freeze the account.  She needs to open another bank account, have everything transferred to it then just close out the joint account.  But I told her that she will have other problems to deal with because of him being intestate.  I told her not to do anything about any snags or problems until she called me.  I would not talk to her about a membership until at least after the funeral but it's something she needs - at least to get some consultation on settling the estate and dealing with the red tape.  I didn't ask her I told her.  I will see that she has a membership in the next few weeks.  If she has any problems she will get one right away.

Since I left her this morning I have spoken to two people I knew and told them it was very important they hear what I had to say.  I will no longer ask people if I can impose on their time for a few minutes, I will tell them I have something to tell them about that they really need to hear.  I realize now that I was not doing them any favours by not imposing on them, in fact I was doing them a dis-service by withholding the information.  Now I am suffering from my guilt.

To all Associates out there, please, please, do not feel you are imposing on your friends by trying to sell them something.  If they are your friends, if you care about them at all, make SURE they understand what this is.  Tell them my story if you wish.  Feel free to use it any way you like.  Don't learn this lesson the hard way like I did.

#92 - Home Improvement Problem
In September 1999 we bought our first home. In November we retained the
services of 'Wayco Flooring' to install a new vinyl floor. Immediately after
the installation we developed problems. There were bubbles, seams had been
joined with incorrect sealant. Some seams had no sealant which resulted in a
condensation problem under the vinyl.  Basically the flooring was poorly
installed. When I discussed my problem with the owner of the company I was
never told the truth and received the total run around.

My only alternative was to contact the 'Better Business Bureau', as Waco
Flooring were members. The BBB told me to get three estimates from other
flooring companies to rectify the problem. All three companies recommended
the flooring be REPLACED !!!!!  Months went by. With each letter I sent to
the BBB, it took more than 90 days to receive a reply back from 'Wayco
Flooring'.  Finally after many attempts to resolve this issue through the
BBB, I gave up.

Almost a year and a half later I was told about 'Pre-Paid Legal Services'. I
was intrigued and became a member after reading their informative brochure.

Later that week I contacted the 'Law Firm in Vancouver'. Within an hour I
had a return call. We discussed my problem and I sent all the correspondence
into the law firm. The Lawyer suggested we notify 'Wayco Flooring' in
writing telling them what we needed done to rectify our problem and that if
"Wayco Flooring" did not contact me by January 31, 2001 I would take further
action by going to 'Small Claims Court'.

I received a letter via the law firm dated January 31, 2001 from 'Wayco
Flooring' stating they would replace the floor. A month later our floor was
replaced to our satisfaction.

I have personally called the 'Law Provider Firm' to thank them. I feel
everyone could benefit having a 'Pre-Paid Legal' membership. Knowing I can
through my membership have legal advise at my finger tips, gives me "peace
of mind".

Yours Truly,
Christy Campbell

#93 - Using The Legal Shield in the U.S.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This was just sent to us and I thought that you should see it......the
product we provide is simply phenomenal!  Just another testimonial as to what
we are all doing by marketing for the fabulous company Pre-Paid Legal
Services, Inc.!

In Success and Friendship,

Lorie & Les Harrell,

Executive Directors

Subject: One of my directors used the legal shield today

Just after dark tonight,Craig Ensey (Corey's little brother) was driving a
tractor just outside Pauls Valley. All the tractor lights were on, but a car
with a drunk driver came by and hit the back tires of the big John Deere
tractor Craig was driving. The impact broke the tractor in HALF, I drove out
and saw it about an hour ago. It is not a small tractor, it is a HUGE John
Deere 4450.

Craig was unhurt (no one can figure that out, should have twisted him into a
pretzel,) however one of the people in the car died at the hospital, another
is in very critical shape and the third should be OK, but has a badly broken
hip.

Craig's mom told me that Craig called PPL from the scene on her mobile phone
and spent a few minutes talking to the law firm here in Oklahoma. They told
him not to worry about anything, but go to the hospital and get checked out
first thing. They told him what questions to answer and what not to say.
After a while the lawyer called back to his mom's car phone just to check on
Craig and see how everything was going!!

His mom told me tonight that she sure was glad he has PPL, and I sure am
too. Can you imagine how it would feel to be in a wreck where someone dies
and NOT have someone to call at 9pm at night? Much less a lawyer that calls
you back later just to check in and see if you are alright. This becomes more
of a mission for me every day. What a great product we market!

Say a prayer for Craig, and for the family that lost a loved one tonight and
could lose 2 more.

#94 - Canada Customs & Revenue Problem

Before moving to B.C, I was a Realtor.  As an independent contractor, I
was responsible for collecting and paying G.S.T.  Shortly after I left my
former career, in January 1999, I wrote Canada Customs and Revenue

Agency (CCRA) and advised them of the change.

Upon arriving in Vancouver, last summer, I received a Notice of Assessment
from CCRA advising me that they had arbitrarily assessed me $9,000 plus
interest for the intervening period from January 1999 to July 2000. I wrote back
one letter and explained the situation.  Earlier this spring I received a second
Notice of Assessment and again wrote a letter explaining what had happened.
That letter generated some sympathy and they deregistered my GST effective
Dec. 31, 2000. However, the $9,000 plus accrued interest assessment still stood.

That was too much.  I called our Provider Law firm and explained the situation.
They took a couple days to research the law and called me back with
a recommended course of action.

I followed their advice, called the Halifax G.S.T. office and again explained
my situation.  This time I was told that all I needed to do was to submit
a G.S.T. Return showing no income for the period in question and my
account would be credited for the entire amount.

Had I not called the law firm, I would have lost my cool, sworn at CCRA
for the rest of my life and done everything I could to avoid paying an
unjust assessment.  Instead, the call to the lawyer empowered me and I
now have a clean slate, and saved almost $10,000, plus hours of aggravation
and heart ache.

How can I put a value on my membership when it provides that quality of
satisfaction?  I can't.

Sincerely,
Dan Eisenhauer

#95 - Peace Of Mind in Alberta

I am a member of PPL Legal Care of Canada in Lethbridge, Alberta. I have been a member since March, 2001, when it opened here. I work at an IGA store, and I am the shop steward there as well.

About three months ago, there was a employee in the bakery that had been suspected of theft. One day management caught him after he walked out of the store without paying for some items. I was called into the office, where the store manager filled me in on the circumstances, and we talked about the penalty he would impose on the baker. I had negotiated, what should have been a termination, down to a one week suspension.
The baker was brought in and admitted to doing wrong, and was informed of the punishment. He apologized several times before he left.

The next day I was called into the office by the manager, and he told me to sit down. He said that the baker, who was suspended the day before, had gone home that day and committed suicide. I, along with everyone else at our store, was in shock. Then I heard that his wife was going to bring about a lawsuit, and being part of the process, I didn't know what to do. Then I remembered my membership, and I called my lawyer. He returned my call within 2 hours. I explained the situation, and he was very helpful as far as telling me what to do and how to do it, to protect myself. It was one of the best feelings I have ever felt, just knowing that I had that help on my side.

Sometimes it's not about saving hundreds or thousands of dollars, but having the peace of mind knowing I was doing the right proper thing.

I will never be without my membership!

Our daughter was getting ready to go through a divorce when we first became associates with Pre-Paid Legal Services two years ago.   She bought a membership from us and at that time it was only $12.95.    Her now ex-husband spent hundreds & hundreds of dollars on a local attorney then gave the paperwork to her.   She, in turn, took that same paperwork and faxed it to our Provider Law Firm (Luce, Lombino & Riggio) who looked it over for her and made suggestions as to what she should change to benefit her and her situation.   She did as they told her and came out with $60,000!!!   If she had not had them working on her behalf, we are quite sure that she would have settled for a considerable less amount and possibly never know the difference.

That will pay for a LOT of years of membership so thank you Pre-Paid Legal Services.
